Antique Victorian Gilt & Agate Cameo Brooch

This beautiful Victorian gold brooch is executed in the ornate Rococo Revival style. Set with a beveled oval white agate plaque and carved shell cameo. The brooch measures 2 1/2" by 2". The metal is gilt brass. Circa 1870.
The name "rococo" derives from the French word for shell, rocaille. The style is characterized by shell forms and swirling curves. The mid 1800's saw a renewed interest in this decorative style from the early 17th century France.
