Antique dematoid garnets from the Russian Ural mountains are rare and quite beautiful. This antique Victorian ring in 18K yellow gold is set with an oval dematoid garnet measuring approximately 6.5mm x 5.8mm x 2.9mm for a calculated weight of .88 carat. The green garnet is accented with six Old Mine cut diamonds ranging in size from 2.8mm - 3.5mm for a total estimated weight of 1.00 carat. The diamonds range in clarity from VS to SI.
Demantoid garnets were first discover in the Ural mountains in 1868. The green garnets were named demantoid for the French word for diamond, because they have the rare quality of dispersion, creating "fire" of flashes of the rainbow spectrum. High dispersion is found in very few colored gems. It is a characteristic we associate with diamond, hence the name. Most demantoids are small in size rarely occurring over 3 carats. Most are substantially smaller than one carat.
Russian demantoids have a type of inclusion called "horse tail" because of its appearance under magnification. This stone displays horse tail inclusions.
